The first road version of the Ford GT40 sports car will be put up for auction (29 photos)
Mecum Auctions is planning to sell a remarkable example of the first-generation Ford GT40 sports car in January. The company built only 31 GT40 Mk I examples for public use, and this is the first car to be delivered to a private buyer. The price of the meticulously restored rarity, which comes with many spare parts, is not specified, but could be in the millions of dollars.
The car was assembled in late 1965, and was delivered to the buyer in March 1966. The then Ford ambassador, famous racer and future Formula 1 champion Jackie Stewart, took part in the delivery ceremony.
The first owner of the Ford GT40 was no stranger to the auto industry. This was James Fielding, the head of Heenan & Froude, which supplied Shelby with chassis dynamometers. He owned the sports car until 1971, when, at the insistence of a neighbor, he gave it up - allegedly in exchange for a Rolls-Royce.
In the mid-1970s, the GT40 was shipped to Australia, 20 years later - to Germany, then back to Australia, to California and eventually back to Europe. Auctioneers claim that the car still retains many original parts, including body panels and a powertrain, which is rare for GT40s, which usually actively participated in racing. The sports car is equipped with an eight-cylinder engine with four carburetors for 335 horsepower and a five-speed manual ZF gearbox.
This Ford GT40 has a Certificate of Originality issued by the FIA, which allows it to participate in various themed races dedicated to automobile classics.
