Hundreds of happy tailed inhabitants inhabit the ruins where the great Caesar once perished. 
In Rome, cats actually have practically their own ancient temple complex. 
This archaeological wonder, known as Largo di Torre Argentina, was excavated as part of Mussolini's restoration work in 1929. The excavations uncovered four temples that lie 6 meters below the current street level. In addition to the ruins of these temples, Torre Argentina also contains part of Pompey's famous portico. 
Today, volunteers at this amazing place care for about 130 cats, many of which are disabled or sick. After the excavations, feral cats appeared in Rome, as well as all over the city, and the gattaras, or cat ladies, began feeding and caring for them. Since the mid-1990s, their numbers have grown from about 90 to 250 cats, and the charity has stepped up its care for sick and injured cats, as well as a mass spay and neuter program to keep the feral population under control. Most of the locals have special needs - they are blind, legless, or crippled by senseless human cruelty. 
On any given afternoon, a small crowd gathers to watch the cats relax and enjoy the sun on the ancient columns and steps. The animals can be difficult to spot at first, but once you spot one tailed figure, it becomes clear that they are everywhere. Visitors can admire the cats and ruins from the street, or descend the steps into the underground office to volunteer, visit the gift shop, make donations, and even adopt a cat of their choice.
