Santa does not exist: parents want to sue a priest who made their children cry (3 photos)
Parents have called the words of the priest Paul Chamberlain about Santa Claus "absolutely disgusting". Now he faces suspension from office and a lawsuit.
A scandal has erupted in the British city of Hampshire around the words of the priest Paul Chamberlain, who told children that Santa Claus does not exist. Six children burst into tears after hearing what they heard, and the parents of the little ones are preparing to file a complaint against the dignitary.
The media indicates that the priest came to the sixth-graders as an invited guest. During a conversation with the children, he frankly said: "Now let's be honest - Santa does not exist." Then the father allegedly accused the children's parents of "mock[ing] the cookies" that the kids leave for Santa and on Easter Eve. Many of the children were shocked by what they heard and began to cry.
When the parents found out what had happened to the children at school, they immediately went to the principal. They demanded an explanation of how the priest was allowed to talk to the children and why the teachers did not intervene in the situation.
Now a group of parents have already filed a complaint against the priest with the local diocese, demanding that he be removed from his duties as vicar and an official apology. Despite the fact that the church authorities, despite recognizing the fact of Chamberlain's speech as an "error in judgment," have not yet applied any sanctions to him.
The father of one of the schoolchildren said that he does not know how the school allowed this to happen, and considers the priest's behavior "absolutely disgusting." Another mother of a girl who burst into tears after hearing this, told the media that Chamberlain brought the children to tears, and the adults "tried to console their children."
Later, as journalists write, the parents want to receive an official apology for the dignitary's words. Otherwise, they promise to sue the diocese and Reverend Chamberlain for the fact of insult.
Later, the Portsmouth diocese officially apologized to the parents and children for the priest's actions. They noted that Chamberlain "should not have done this" (talking about Santa - ed.), and also apologized to the school, parents and children for his words.
"The school and the diocese are working together to resolve this issue. Following this, the principal informed parents for the second time about the official apology of the priest Paul Chamberlain to all who may have been offended by his words," the church statement said.
