A Chinese woman is fighting a legal battle with her husband five years after he tried to kill her. In 2019, Yu Xiaodong pushed 37-year-old Wang Nan off a 33-metre cliff in Thailand. The woman suffered serious injuries and lost her baby, but survived. The man was sentenced to 33 years in prison, but is demanding 30 million yuan (more than $4 million) from Wang to agree to an annulment.

According to Wang, her husband demanded 30 million yuan from her for "mental suffering and loss of youth"

"Yu and his mother claim that this amount is to compensate for mental suffering and the loss of youth. The mother-in-law even blamed me: "If it weren't for your successful business, my son would not have made the mistake," the survivor said.

The attempted murder occurred on June 9, 2019, when Wang was three months pregnant.

"Go to hell!" the husband said and pushed wife

The couple were standing on top of a cliff in a national park watching the sunrise when Yu tenderly kissed his pregnant wife on the cheek. He then said, "Go to hell!" and pushed the woman. Wang miraculously survived.

Before the incident, Yu had become addicted to gambling. When he asked his wife to pay off a 2 million yuan (about $275,470) debt, she agreed to pay half. The fall left Wang with 17 broken bones and the loss of her unborn child. Doctors told her she would never be able to conceive naturally again.

The woman recently gave birth to a son conceived through IVF. The father is listed as Yu Xiaodong, as the couple is still legally married.

The story has caused a stir. Chinese social media is buzzing with discussions: "Ask for compensation after an attempted murder? How can you be so shameless?"; "The law needs to be amended! Victims should not suffer because of loopholes in the law"; "If one of the spouses commits a crime, such as attempted murder, the courts should consider divorce in an expedited manner without requiring the consent of the perpetrator."

Zhang Yongquan, a former prosecutor and owner of the Grandall law firm, commented: "Any court hearing requires the physical presence of the parties involved. If one of the spouses is in prison, a lawyer or notary must visit the prison for notarization. Then the relevant legal documents must be sent to the court."

He also added that holding court hearings online could solve this problem.
