Zoologists have been calling a male penguin by a female name for eight years (2 photos)
British zoologists found themselves in a funny situation when a random DNA test revealed the truth for them - for eight years they called a male king penguin by the female name Maggie.
Zoologists from Birdland Park, located in Gloucestershire, were shocked to find out that they made a comical mistake - they called a male king penguin by the female name Maggie, when it later turned out that he was a male.
The media writes that the representative of the king penguins was purchased in one of the Danish zoos eight years ago to increase the population. For unknown reasons, the male was given the name Maggie, thinking that the male was a female.
Over time, zoologists began to notice that the alleged "female" was not reproducing. Then they were alarmed by the behavior of the "female" - "she" actively began to walk together in a pair with another male, as is usually done by male representatives of this species.
To dispel suspicions, zoologists sent a feather of "Maggie" for DNA testing. The test results left no doubt - specialists called the name of the male king penguin female. Realizing their embarrassment, ornithologists decided to "correct" their mistake - now the ten-year-old adult male king penguin has the nickname Magnus.
The park's press service says that due to this embarrassment they had to make a number of adjustments to their procedures. In addition, a female from Germany has now been urgently found for Magnus to ensure the long-term success of the king penguin colony.
