Sometimes life gives us pleasant surprises. BBC Morning presenter Riyad Khalaf found an egg in the grass and decided to take it home. Soon a tiny duckling named Spike came into his life.
One day, Riyad Khalaf found an egg in the street, there were no mother birds nearby turned out
"I felt that life was being born in the egg. A sense of responsibility arose, like a parent. It may sound stupid, but I was not mistaken," the man says.
He brought the egg home, placed it in an incubator, and eagerly waited for the chick to hatch
A tiny duckling was born, who was named Spike
Khalaf provided his pet with everything necessary
"I've been learning so much and it's been so much fun. I'm increasingly convinced that my obsession with him (maybe due to my ADHD) is good for both of us. My duckling is my number one priority, he helps me focus and be in harmony with myself."
He built him a cozy and safe house
Teaching Spike to eat and swim wasn't easy, but Khalaf found an original way. He used mirrors and a plush duck to show the bird how to act correctly
Khalaf plans to give Spike to an animal rehabilitation center so that the duckling can join the flock
"With each passing day, I realize how quickly the moment of our separation is approaching. I feel it in my heart. I'll get through this with time, with the help of my cats, my friends, and my junk food."
While it will be hard to say goodbye, Khalaf knows it's the right decision
"Every day, looking at him, I never cease to be amazed at how such a complex, intelligent, and beautiful little life can emerge from a simple egg. Nature is truly incredible."
