At least one person died. The exact number of victims is being clarified.
In the Argentine city of Villa Gesell (Buenos Aires province), a ten-story building collapsed right in the middle of the city, TN reports with reference to rescuers. Rescuers noted that the building was 80% destroyed. Despite this, the Dubrovnik Hotel was operating in it. At the time of the collapse, there were people inside, including workers who were installing an elevator. Interestingly, they did this illegally.
Municipal authorities said that the structure of the building in the collapsed part was illegally changed. Later, the mayor noted that workers were supposed to repair only the facade, but not touch the lower floors. This is how the collapse occurred, which pulled the entire building down with it.
Ten people are missing. Buenos Aires Province Security Minister Javier Alonso reported one death, and one woman was also pulled out from under the rubble. Several people are still under the rubble. Rescuers are clearing it out.
A criminal case was opened against those responsible for the repair work: the foreman and several workers. They are facing prison, since there are already fatalities.
