In Indonesia, Universities Censor Female Students in Photos (6 photos)
Have you seen, for example, how women are photoshopped on international posters in Saudi Arabia? Indonesian universities have even surpassed them in some ways! Because they first recruit and photograph female students, and then blur them out themselves.
Interestingly, this is not in some particularly religious states, but at the State University of Jakarta. There, they announced new members of student government, strangely blurring out the female participants.
The Faculty of Engineering published photos of its new student government, in which women are relegated to the background. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences depicted its male members in their normal human form, but presented its female members with illustrations in hijabs!
Find the women, they look like ghosts in the photo)
There is no uniform standard for "blotting out" yet, so there is room for experimentation.
The head of the student government of the Faculty of Engineering said that the women themselves agreed to be depicted this way, and that they were not pressured to censor.
I especially like that in the couple photos with the man, they were also whitened
"Maybe they are uncomfortable with exposing their faces. Women themselves never publish photos of their faces," he told local media.
However, the Faculty of Engineering has been censoring its female members since at least 2018. Other departments have published photos in which women were greatly reduced in size, i.e. microphotos!
But the photos were replaced with cute avatars, and the guys got a normal photo
That is, they wanted to protect supposedly religious women, but it turns out that they made their images marginalized. Otherwise, they could have drawn all the students in a cute cartoon form, but the men got full-fledged adult photos, it's kind of offensive.
Incredibly funny posters in Saudi Arabia
"I am shocked that a state university blurs photos of women or replaces them with caricatures. This is an erasure of women's roles and existence from history. Women are slowly being pushed out of the public space," the public was outraged, especially since this is an engineering faculty. And then they say that there are no female engineers!
In fact, quite a few universities in Indonesia practice this in different old ways. For example, the Islamic Geography Club of the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) edited photos of women, blurring them beyond recognition.
But in Indonesia they are afraid of ghosts!
It looks like... a bad dystopia, and everyone comes up with their own stupid way. I think they could really make avatars for everyone, both men and women, that would respect morality, and no one would be offended.
