The Unluckiest Hacker of the Year Found (2 photos)
When paranoia led to what he feared most.
This story about a talented but incredibly cowardly guy began in early January of this year in Alabama. Eric Council Jr. decided to test his strength on the social network X. He successfully hacked the official account of the Securities and Exchange Commission. He posted a fake post there with the following content: “Today, the SEC approves the listing of #Bitcoin ETF on all registered national stock exchanges.”
After this publication, Bitcoin jumped by as much as $1,000, but then it turned out that the cryptocurrency had not yet been approved for official exchanges. Although the price of Bitcoin jumped after the fake tweet, it did not take long for the SEC to figure out what had happened and restore access to its X account. They rolled out a refutation post, and Bitcoin fell by $2,000.
It is not known how much 25-year-old Eric managed to earn on these Bitcoin jumps, but after this incident, the guy began to see things. He became depressed and bombarded the unfortunate Google with queries like: "how can I know for sure if the FBI is investigating me", "how do I know if the FBI is watching me",
"what are the signs that you are under investigation by law enforcement, even if you have not been contacted".
Well, that's how, in fact, the FBI found this paranoid man through these very regular queries. He was arrested for identity theft and fraud using access devices.
If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.
