Fashionable diet can lead to heart problems and dementia (4 photos)
The carnivore diet, or the carnivore diet, is gaining popularity around the world. Its adherents eat meat and animal products, but give up carbohydrates. They say that excess weight goes away and health improves. However, experts are skeptical about such experiments.
On the podcast "Doctor's Kitchen", doctor Rupi Aujla warned that the carnivore diet, like the keto diet, can "promote inflammation and aging." The results of past studies confirm this.
"We found changes in the functioning of key organs such as the heart and kidneys. The accumulation of aging cells led to systemic inflammation and intoxication," he explained.
"They are not destroyed by the immune system, these are cells that you do not need in excess, and they can contribute to general systemic inflammation."
The specialist recalled that humans have a different gastrointestinal tract than predators. In addition, people need plant foods more than any predators.
Aujla also noted that a carnivorous lifestyle may increase the risk of "cardiac fibrosis and mitochondrial dysfunction" in addition to elevated cholesterol.
"I'm concerned that people are putting themselves at risk for cardiovascular disease and even dementia."
Short-term carnivore diet may benefit "people with true intolerances."
The doctor concluded: "In my opinion, this is playing with fire, because we have no data on how adherents of such diets feel in the long term."
