The loneliest killer whale in the world: a heartbreaking video (4 photos + 1 video)
A video from Argentina's Mundo Marino aquarium shows a 35-year-old orca named Xhamenk standing motionless and staring at the gate of her small pool for 24 hours straight. It's a very sad sight.
A 35-year-old orca named Xhamenk lives at Argentina's Mundo Marino aquarium. She has spent most of her life in captivity.
Xhamenk was captured in Samborombon Bay when he was just 3 years old. Since then, he has lived in this aquarium, in a small concrete pool.
Kshamenk used to have a friend, another killer whale named Belen. But Belen died in 2000, when she was 13 years old. Since then, Kshamenk has lived in complete isolation from his fellow whales.
A group of animal rights activists recently filmed a timelapse video of Kshamenk standing frozen for 24 hours, as if in a silent, desperate cry for help, looking at the gate of his pool. He barely moves, as if he is waiting to be released.
This is a sight that brings tears to your eyes. Animal rights activists want Kshamenk taken from this small pool and transported to a large open sanctuary where he can live with other orcas. Kshamenk is currently the last orca left in captivity in Argentina.
This footage serves as a reminder that keeping wild animals in captivity is associated with great suffering for them.
The defenders hope that the video will help save Kshamenok and give him a chance at a happier life. He deserves the opportunity to spend the rest of his life in more decent conditions, surrounded by his fellow animals. We hope that the efforts of animal rights activists will be successful and Kshamenok will find his freedom.
