Wally the Walrus accidentally became an Internet hero (9 photos + 1 video)
A walrus named Wally accidentally got into a funny situation: he fell asleep on an iceberg somewhere in the Arctic, and as a result, he ended up off the coast of Ireland. At first, Wally climbed onto fishing boats, which could not support him and sank, and then a special raft was built for him. After resting, the animal set off on its return journey!
Walruses are known to be excellent swimmers, but not many of them dare to travel to the shores of Western Europe
Wally the walrus apparently fell asleep on an iceberg that was drifting from the Arctic to Ireland, and quickly became the center of attention of both locals and Internet users.
People fell in love with Wally. Some were so taken with the walrus that he became a source of inspiration for them, resulting in paintings and a children's book.
However, not everything was rosy. While traveling along the western coast of Europe, Wally eventually tired and began looking for places to rest and recuperate.
Wally chose boats as such places, many of which he damaged or sank. Unfortunately for the locals, Wally weighed about 820 kilograms at the time, and most boats could not withstand such a load.
But the inhabitants there are mostly peaceful and, more importantly, responsive. To solve the problem, the British company Divers Marine Life Rescue brought a floating pontoon for Wally to rest on.
Wally drifted for some time on his personal sun lounger, and when he had a good rest and decided to go home, his raft was also equipped with a special float that would help him on the way back north.
A few weeks later, the walrus was already spotted in Iceland, which was a happy ending to the story.
According to marine biologist J.C. Dombrowski, although walruses are very good swimmers and navigate in the water, such stories are extremely rare, and the iceberg theory does not hold water.
To move an iceberg so far from where it should be, let alone for a walrus to sleep on it for the entire journey, would require unique tides and currents, which makes the situation even more unlikely and suggests that Wally's journey to Western Europe could have been different, the expert explained.
In any case, netizens are watching this unusual situation with admiration and are happy that Wally received the help he needed to return safely to his homeland. After all, not every walrus can boast of having traveled to Western Europe and returned home to tell about it!
