A one-of-a-kind Ferrari F40 with a V12 engine will be put up for auction (35 photos + 1 video)
At the end of August, a unique Ferrari F40 will be sold at the Iconic Auctioneers auction - the only example in the world equipped with a V12 engine instead of the standard V8 with twin turbocharging. The car is valued at $700,000.
The 1992 supercar was used as a basis. It was not put on sale: the chassis was used in Maranello for crash tests. The British company Simpson Motorsport, which had been collaborating with Ferrari for several years, managed to get hold of the car that was no longer needed.
Instead of the original V8 2.9 twin-turbocharged engine, a naturally aspirated V12 5.5 from a more modern Ferrari 550 was installed in the engine bay. However, the gain in power was negligible: 485 hp versus the stock 478. The engine is paired with a Newland manual transmission.
The body is lightweight with an eye on the F40 GTE version. A safety cage is installed that meets FIA requirements. In previous years, the supercar competed in several races and rose to second place at the finish. For the last few years, it has been idle and underwent a full service before being sold.
The car is registered under the name Simpson-Ferrari GTR and is approved for public roads. The estimated cost of 700 thousand dollars is small for an F40. Copies in good stock condition go for 2 million and more.
