Six dead foreigners found in Bangkok hotel (5 photos)

The bodies of six guests, four of them Vietnamese citizens and two of them from the United States, were found at the five-star Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. The cause of death was cyanide.





Police suspect 56-year-old Chong Sherin. Traces of poison were found during the autopsy, as well as on glasses and a kettle in the hotel room.

Relatives of the victims told investigators that Chong convinced the victims to invest money in various construction projects.

A poisoned couple invested about 10 million baht ($278,000) to build a hospital in Japan and threatened to sue if the project did not go ahead.

The six were due to appear in court later this month, but Chong suggested they meet and try to reach an agreement.

According to Police Major General Nopasilpa Poonsawat, the group was last seen on Monday afternoon when they entered the room.

The suspect refused the hotel staff's offer to make tea and did it herself. No one left the room, and the door was locked from the inside.

"Four bodies were found in the living room and two in the bedroom. Two appeared to be trying to reach the door but fell," Bangkok police chief Lt. Gen. Thithi Sangsavang said.

A mass suicide has been ruled out as some have planned future trips, including guided tours.



In crime scene photographs, the food served in the room remained untouched.

Chong and another guest, 55-year-old Dang Hung Van, had American passports.

Meanwhile, police are searching for a seventh person whose name was included in the hotel booking. The Vietnamese brother of one of the six killed left Thailand on July 10 and is not believed to be involved in the killing.



Prime Minister Srettha Thaweesinh said the US Federal Bureau of Investigation would be involved in the investigation.
