A family from Michigan (USA) while renovating their home found a 20-meter tunnel from the Prohibition era, which was used for smuggling alcohol.
Hayley Gilmartin and her husband Trevor discovered a water-filled room while removing a broken hot tub in the middle of their home. There was practically nothing in the secret room except a support pillar and a wood-paneled wall.
“I think that any person who finds a sewer manhole under his house in pitch darkness will be scared. We scuba dived and swam to the other end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, it is impossible to pump out the water from there, since it comes from Lake Huron,” he said in an interview with 30-year-old Hayley.
The couple, who bought the house in 2020, later learned that their neighbors also have similar tunnels under their houses.
As it turns out, almost a century ago, Lake Huron and the adjacent St. Clair River, which separates the United States from Canada, began to be used by criminal syndicates as waterways to transport smuggled alcohol from north of the border.
According to experts, this territory accounted for 75% of illegal transactions associated with Prohibition.
After learning about the story, Gilmartin decided to give a tour to her TikTok followers, racking up millions of views.
“We will continue to explore this room. If possible, we will try to somehow drain it in order to arrange a games room or bowling alley there,” admitted the author of the video.
