The Americans showed a prototype of a hybrid tractor of the future (5 photos + 1 video)
The American automobile manufacturer Kenworth presented a prototype of the future SuperTruck 2 road train. The tractor with a futuristic design is equipped with an aerodynamic cabin and a hybrid power plant, which will provide significant fuel savings. The design allows you to install any power unit on the machine.
Conceptually, the Kenworth is close to the Tesla Semi: a narrowed cabin, the driver sitting in the center. But the car is not electric, but a hybrid. Paccar diesel engine with 440 hp power. A 48-volt starter-generator helps. Transmission: 12-speed automatic.
The creators of the tractor note that they used the most suitable power plant for the concept today. It is no longer a pure internal combustion engine, but also not an electric car, which is difficult to fully operate given the current state of the infrastructure. At the same time, the design allows you to use any circuit on SuperTruck 2: gas, hydrogen, purely electric.
The prototype weighs 3.2 tons less than the production 2009 Kenworth T660. At one time, it was considered one of the most aerodynamic and economical heavy trucks, consuming an average of 39.2 l/100 km. For the new SuperTruck 2, only 18.4 l/100 km is declared.
The narrow cabin at the front reduces aerodynamic drag. Cameras instead of bulky rear-view mirrors serve the same purpose. The space behind the driver's seat is made transformable: different layouts are provided for eating, short rest and sleep.
The developer does not say anything about the prospects for serial production of the Kenworth SuperTruck 2.
