Well, now let's talk about news from the sports world. Sports car racing is a thing of the past. Now it's official. Almost.
Well, think for yourself, why pay crazy amounts of money to pilots when you can install artificial intelligence in their place? No fees, whims or deaths for you. Some advantages. Even if there is an accident, replacing the AI is not as difficult as looking for a new professional pilot.
But enough empty words, let's move on to the event itself. We present to your attention the first car competition of Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) among racing cars controlled by artificial intelligence.
Instead of pilots, the cars were controlled by installed autonomous control systems. The prize fund was $2.25 million. 8 cars took to the start.
Although the historic event was complete from start to finish, the path was far from smooth.
Qualifying turned into a chaotic ballet of twists, turns and inexplicable pit stops.
Driverless Dallara supercars equipped with cameras and the latest software had a hard time negotiating the Yas Marina Circuit.
The victory was won by the TUM team, representing the Technical University of Munich. There were some accidents and mistakes. On the last lap, the leading car of the Unimore Racing team (eventually took third place) stopped and let the opponent go ahead.
And if anyone is very interested, here is the full recording of the event.
The A2RL self-driving car tournament featured an artificial intelligence versus human competition at the Yas Marina Circuit. But this time the man won.
