Footage of a brazen robbery in the British capital has gone viral on the Internet. Two criminals carried out goods from a Boots store, located meters from the police station, in broad daylight.
The accomplices went into the Boots store in Station Road, Chingford, and began throwing items off the shelves into large black sports bags.
The helpless cashier just watched what was happening. One of the buyers called the police.
In the 14-second video, the woman can be heard reporting the shoplifting to police.
She says, "Can you come to Station Road? People steal here."
And she added: “They are beating the staff. Come quickly.”
There is a "shoplifting epidemic" in the UK, with 365,164 cases reported in 12 months.
Theft costs retailers around £1 billion a year, with the number of thefts more than doubling in the last six years.
The British chain Tesco was forced to put anti-theft tags on baskets. This move left one buyer puzzled.
James Beach, 45, said: "I couldn't believe it when I saw they'd put tags on the bins. Will that stop the thieves?"
Jolene Mohan, 37, stole four bottles of vodka worth £96 from a Tesco supermarket in Hampton earlier this month. The employees ran after her to the parking lot, but the thief began to threaten them with a needle.
In the CCTV footage, the woman selects bottles of booze and places them in her bag before covering the loot with her outerwear and leaving the store.
Three employees surrounded Mogan in the parking lot, but she refused to hand over the goods. When one of the workers tried to grab the bottles from her bag, Mogan hit her in the face.
The offender appeared in court and was sent to prison for 12 weeks.
Another crook stole 14 packs of meat from a Co-op store in Peterborough in two attempts, then returned again five days later.
Mark Moss, 36, carried away £100 worth of groceries. In January of this year, a man received a suspended sentence for 16 thefts, and now he will be sent to jail.
