In Australia, about 50 crabs flocked to a family's picnic. Coconut crabs (Birgus latro) have an excellent sense of smell and have no problem climbing to the tops of trees, so a picnic table was not a problem for them.
Coconut crabs are protected as an endangered species in Australia and are prohibited from being caught or eaten. Individual individuals can reach a meter in length and weigh up to four kilograms.
