It is believed that the more xiaosan a man can provide, the higher his status. Who can become xiaosan
Just as there are women who dream of creating a strong family and raising children with their spouse in love and harmony, there are women who dream only of a rich patron. To become a xiaosan in China, it is enough to have an attractive appearance, be well-groomed and young, up to 24-28 years old. And, of course, get to the xiaosan casting and be chosen. Many girls are only concerned with their appearance, just so as not to “go into circulation.” 
This strange fashion in the highest circles of China arose during the country's rapid economic recovery. People began to move from villages to cities. Some men, having left their family in the village, acquired second and third “wives” in a new place, while their legal wives, as a rule, were not aware of this. In turn, girls who came to large cities in search of a better life did not always look for well-paid work in enterprises, but decided to earn money on their own.
Who wins: strength or cunning
Having become a xiaosan, a girl receives a rented apartment in a good area, a certain monthly fee and expensive gifts. Realizing that it is impossible to be a xiaosan for a long time, and younger ones will still step on their toes, secondary wives prepare themselves a safety cushion in advance: they save money, invest it in something profitable and slowly collect dirt on their “husbands.” In China, there is even a concept of “fighting corruption with the help of officials’ mistresses.” With the help of xiaosan, many corrupt officials were exposed. But the fear of being caught for theft or other crimes still does not stop those who like to cheat on their other halves. 
There are always two sides to any medal. Having become a xiaosan, you can not only receive a decent standard of living as a reward for the pleasure you receive, but also a heap of problems in the future. On the one hand, xiaosang may have trouble from the legal wife of his benefactor. In most cases, women do not forgive infidelity, although there is a known case when a wife and mistress were friends with each other and raised children together. Obviously, these women had no possessive instinct at all. Such cases have been and are encountered in traditional Islamic societies, where a wife and concubines can treat each other well and not find out who the husband loves more. It happens that a xiaosan gets tired of its patron and he decides to get rid of it or exchange it for another. In this case, resignation would be the best outcome. If a woman has “annoyed” her in some way or has not pleased her, and the man has a lot of money and connections, then the xiaosan may simply disappear.
