Gelikas are now only hybrid ones. Mercedes-Benz G-Class update presented (27 photos)
Almost without warning, Mercedes-Benz introduced the modernized family of G-Class SUVs. The main thing that happened with the new Gelendvagen was that its engine range was revised, which now only includes “mild” hybrids. The SUV has become more powerful and faster, and it is promised that it will curb your appetite. The appearance was also slightly refreshed, and the range of available equipment, both mechanical and multimedia, was expanded. The petrol V8, fortunately, is not being retired yet, but it will only be available on the flagship AMG version.
At the premiere stage, three engines were announced for the G-Class: 3-liter diesel and petrol sixes for basic SUVs and the most powerful engine for the AMG version. All of them are accompanied by a starter-generator, which briefly adds 20 hp to the output. With. and 200 Nm.
The gasoline Mercedes-Benz G 500 lost its V8 and was replaced with an in-line 6-cylinder engine that will provide 449 hp. With. and 560 Nm. Changing the engine made it possible to gain a little in power, but the six is slightly inferior in terms of traction. It will hit the first 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds with a top speed of 210 km/h and half a second faster than the previous G 500 with an 8-cylinder engine - obviously due to the electric add-on that helps with acceleration.
The SUV with a heavy fuel engine has changed its index to G 450d, and its engine now develops 367 hp. With. and 750 Nm - by 37 liters. With. and 50 Nm more than the current G 400d. Acceleration to hundreds will take 5.8 seconds.
Only the flagship AMG G 63 retained the traditional unit - its engine, as before, according to the passport, develops 585 hp. With. and 850 Nm. However, an electric module was also attached to the 4-liter V8, and, as a result, the dynamics of the SUV improved by 0.2 seconds - the 63rd will take 4.3 seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h. The maximum speed remained at 220 km/h, but for an additional fee the limiter was moved to 240 km/h.
The SUV's transmission, as before, uses a 9-speed automatic transmission. It is combined with an all-wheel drive system that distributes traction in a ratio of 40:60, a transfer case and three locks. In this regard, Gehlen has not changed its roots.
The driving electronics have been added the ability to automatically switch to off-road mode when the locks are activated. There are three of them in total: Trail, Rock and Sand. New functions of the media system with two 12.3-inch displays are also designed to make it easier to conquer off-road terrain. She received the Offroad Cockpit preset. In this mode, off-road indicators such as body position and wheel angle are displayed on the central screen. Plus, Gelendvagen was equipped with a “transparent hood” function.
The main change in the chassis went to the AMG version. It is equipped with Active Ride Control suspension, in which adaptive shock absorbers are interconnected by a single hydraulic system with special valves and a pump. It allows you to selectively change the stiffness of shock absorbers, compensating for dives during acceleration and braking, combat body roll in corners and “unwind” the suspension when off-road. This system eliminates the need for anti-roll bars. The most powerful Gelendvagen will receive hydraulics by default, but as an option it offers the ability to adjust angular stiffness.
Externally, the easiest way to distinguish the updated G-class from the pre-restyling one will be by the modified bumpers with changed outlines of the air intakes. In addition, the SUV was equipped with a new radiator grille and a set of minor aerodynamic improvements. Apparently, Mercedes-Benz designers will not risk radically interfering with the appearance of the iconic model from back in 1979. This is also a joy for fans of restyling Gelendvagens with their own hands.
The appearance of the electric vehicle (expected to be called EQG), which should debut soon, will be almost the same as that of cars running on combustible fuel. According to preliminary data, the battery version will receive four individually controlled electric motors.
The start date for sales of the modernized Mercedes-Benz G-Class has not yet been announced. However, the company revealed the starting recommended retail price: in Germany, the new product will cost at least 122,808 euros - the price has increased by 4.5 thousand euros.
