Dogs' sense of smell is at least 40 times more sensitive than humans.

Although it is impossible to establish an exact figure. And some researchers insist that it is 100 times or more higher. And it was his sense of smell, coupled with tenacity and perseverance, that allowed this handsome guy to prevent a tragedy and, possibly, save many human lives.

Huskies are known for their stubbornness, which they even show to their owners. But the owner of this breed, Chanel Bell from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was surprised when her pet began to concentrate on digging holes in the yard. Right on the concrete surface, although it is very hard. Because before this, the dog had always been obedient and “helped” the owner only if she was busy with the soil herself.

Kobe at work

Four-year-old Kobe should have gotten tired and left this thankless task. But the dog did not give up. The woman filmed a video provided to The Guardian, which she posted on social networks, and decided to further observe the dog’s behavior.

Koby continued digging. And the woman took out a gas leak sensor. Bell has always had the device on hand since her home suffered a leak last November. When the woman noticed her pet digging once again, she turned on the device. And she discovered a leak in the exact place where Kobe was persistently excavating.

A woman used such a device to detect leaks

The team of workers the woman called spent three days fixing the problem. Repairmen confirmed that simply turning on the light could trigger the ignition of gas vapors. The whole house would explode, and perhaps not only it. Accordingly, this behavior of the dog is completely understandable and explainable: the dog reacted to the pungent smell and tried to show this place to the owner.

Representatives of the gas company clarified that a special additive – mercaptan – is added to natural gas. These hydrocarbon derivatives have an unpleasant specific odor, noticeable even at negligible concentrations in the air. The nasty aroma of rotten eggs makes it easier to detect leaks.

Touched by Cobie Chanel’s attentiveness, she called the pet “the dog that saved the block before Christmas.”

The woman listened to one of the comments under the video on the social network (the user suggested writing a book about the husky’s feat). And a few days ago such a book called “The Dog Who Saved the Block Before Christmas” actually came out.

The story is intended for children, but adults also appreciated the book about a brave dog who unexpectedly became a hero.
