Many people are sure that when a fly lands on food, it begins to eat it, biting off pieces. In fact, the fly is not capable of chewing. Instead, the insect regurgitates the contents of its digestive tract onto the food.
Digestive enzymes break down food and turn it into a liquid state. After this, the fly sucks up the resulting “cocktail” with its proboscis.
