Jonathan is probably even older. The exact figure is unknown.
Jonathan was brought from the Seychelles to St. Helena in 1882. Even then he was a healthy, sexually mature male, which means that he was at least 50 years old. Jonathan may be older, but he's certainly no younger than 191.
Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea hololissa). Turtles of this species live a maximum of 150 years. Jonathan is not only the oldest turtle in the world, but the oldest living creature in principle, according to the Guinness Book of Records website.
Veterinarians said that Jonathan feels just fine. He loves to bask in the sun, take a bath and is still trying to continue his family line. People who care for the turtle say he doesn't look like an old man at all. He is very active and sociable.
"Jonathan is in good health and all signs at the moment give us hope that he will live to see his third century - if he hasn't already," veterinarian Joe Hollins told reporters.
