What secret was hidden behind the appearance of the legendary 90s band “Enigma” (5 photos + 2 videos)
Everyone probably knows the music of the group “Enigma”. But today for many this is just “hello from the 90s”, but a quarter of a century ago this German team was a stunning success. Interest in the compositions was fueled by an aura of mystery, because at the time of the release of the first album, no one knew the names and faces of the members of the group, whose name is translated from Greek as “mystery.”
The Enigma project, founded in 1990, was entirely studio-based and did not involve holding live concerts. But they managed to maintain the intrigue for only a short time - a little more than a year. In 1991, the Munich choir Kapelle Antiqua sued the group and demanded a public apology and monetary compensation for the use of their chorales in their compositions. The scandal that erupted around this lawsuit revealed the names of the participants in the project.
Enigma was founded by a German musician of Romanian origin, Michael Cretu. In the 80s, he worked as a keyboard player in the group Arabesque, where he met his love in the person of vocalist Sandra Ann Lauer. Cretu convinced Sandra to leave the trio and start working on her own project.
The couple was joined by several other talented musicians - Frank Peterson, David Fairstein and Peter Cornelius. During the existence of the team, its composition changed several times. The first album "Enigma", called "MCMXC a.D", became a real revelation for music lovers and received many awards.
Compositions from it were on all the charts and were played in discos all over the world. The project turned out to be stronger than the relationship between Michael and Sandra - they broke up in 2007, but the group still exists and regularly releases new albums.
In 2019, an event of particular importance occurred - “Enigma” began performing concerts, however, under the changed name “Original Enigma Voices”. Michael Cretu is not in the band's live lineup - Andrew Donalds, Andreas Harde and Fox Lima are performing on stage.
The Enigma group is rightfully considered one of the most successful groups in the world. To date, he has sold 70 million albums, received more than 100 gold and platinum records and three Grammy Awards. We can only add that the members of the Enigma group are not the only musicians who hid their faces - this technique was used by many successful teams.
