In the USA, a robotic dog helped detain an armed man
In Los Angeles, a passenger on an overnight bus noticed that a sleeping man had a gun between his legs. Frightened by the attack, he reported what he saw to the driver. He called the police and, having reached the nearest intersection, stopped the transport and released all passengers onto the street.
Meanwhile, the cops arrived at the bus stop. They cordoned off the area to detain the armed man. Law enforcement officers tried to talk to the passenger without entering the vehicle, but did not receive a response from him. To avoid a possible shootout, it was decided to use a robot dog.
Boston Dynamics was sent to the bus, it was supposed to convey information about the situation inside. This is how the police learned that the passenger was still sleeping soundly. The cops did not risk taking the vehicle by storm and preferred to wait. And only a couple of hours later, when the man finally woke up and got off the bus, they managed to detain him.
According to police, the weapon turned out to be an air gun.
It is known that the robot dog was purchased for approximately 278 thousand dollars by the Los Angeles City Council and donated to the local police. The police department was required to provide quarterly reports on the use of the device. The robotic dog was named Spot and trained a member of the SWAT team to operate the device. Now the robot is used in circumstances requiring the response of a special forces team and, it seems, for any other reasons, because... you have to justify the purchase of an expensive toy.
