The Russian avionics were removed and the engines were replaced with Rolls-Royce ones. China withdrew from a joint project with Russia to create an aircraft (2 photos)
CR929 was first renamed COMAC Wide-Body, and now C929 The project to create a joint Russian-Chinese wide-body long-range aircraft CR929 can be finally buried by the Russians: the Chinese decided to act independently. The designations have even been changed: now the airliner, like the younger COMAC C919, is called COMAC C929. The letters CR, which appeared in the name from the very beginning, symbolized cooperation between China and Russia (China-Russia, CR). In the summer, the airliner was renamed COMAC Wide-Body, and now only the letter C remains in the name. Accordingly, there will be no Russian avionics on the plane, and Rolls-Royce will supply the engines (previously it was supposed to use PD-35). But in terms of replacing the Chinese engines, one can understand: serial PD-35s will appear only by the end of the decade, and the CR929 itself has been in development for eight years already – Why wait another six years for the PD-35 if you can get an engine from Rolls-Royce right now?
As for the COMAC C929, this aircraft will now most likely be presented as an independent development of China — exactly the same as the COMAC C919 is presented. And it doesn’t matter that the engines are imported: COMAC C919 is equipped with LEAP-1C engines produced by the French-American CFM, but the aircraft is called truly Chinese.
