In the spring-summer of 2024, it will be fashionable to style your hair with gel, comb it back, leaving a few sloppy strands. The hairstyle should give the impression of unwashed hair and naturalness, says Vogue magazine, which many consider the fashion bible.

Fashion is a complicated business, and its trends are sometimes seriously surprising.

It looks like a new craze has taken over the industry. Luckily for us mere mortals, keeping up with the latest trend is as easy as shelling pears. Finally, you can be fashionable without putting much effort into it.

Vogue declares unwashed hair a new trend you can't miss

On the catwalks during the spring-summer 2024 collections, preference was given to stylish combed-back hair

Fashion brands use a special texturing effect for models' hairstyles, which is achieved using hair products and allows you to create both smooth and rough aesthetic images. And this is a strong argument for accepting the characteristics of unwashed hair, even if it hasn't been washed for two, three or four days.

High fashion houses such as Sandy Liang, Anna Sui and Jason Wu have reportedly introduced a trend dubbed "mermaidcore". This means that models are styled on oily and wet hair.

Some brands showed hair styled with gel at the crown

Italian brand Etro showed a compromise between the dominant trends: the hair on the top of the head was combed back with gel, and the rest was styled in sleek waves at the forehead.

At the Prada show, fashion hairstylist Guido Palau added an artistic touch, with intricately styled strands appearing on models' foreheads, cascading from under massive fabric headbands.

In contrast, Andreadamo, Giada and Tom Ford opted for a polished look with a glossy finish for their slicked-back hairstyles.

The Miu Miu brand, on the contrary, offered a universal image that can be interpreted differently depending on the point of view

In accordance with this image, the hair can be either freshly washed or oiled and combed.

“These are hairstyles that are specially trimmed to appear partially styled,” the stylist’s opinion

Peter Do's hairstyle, done by stylist Jawara, was considered the most realistic: the hair was pulled back from the face, as if the models had tousled it with their hands, the look of the hair was a little oily, but natural and organic.

Celebrity stylist Vernon Francois told Vogue: "Hairstyles that are deliberately styled to appear partially styled, lightly oiled, or delicately damp are attention-grabbing because they effectively reflect shine."

“This new version of the aesthetic is clean.”

“She's great for the runway and this new take on the aesthetic is clean, futuristic and dramatic,” he added. Another celebrity hairstylist, Mara Rozzak, echoed this sentiment.

Pros noted that the hairstyle is “flattering and versatile—hair can be pulled back, tied into a topknot, or simply tucked behind the ear.”

Adam Campbell, a stylist whose long list of clients includes Sydney Sweeney, Madeline Cline and Florence Pugh, sums it up: "I love the grunge-inspired look that harkens back to the '90s."

“I like the grunge look.”

“Plus, the ease of doing this style is one of its biggest appeals,” he added.

According to Vernon Francois, to create this style, all you need is hairspray, mousse and water-based gel.

According to the expert, the ease of creating such an image is one of its most attractive aspects

Adam Campbell recommended using gel wax around the hairline and at the roots.

Colorist Matt Rez explained, “Solid hair colors look best with bold styles because the style itself creates depth and volume. This creates shadows and makes the color appear darker.”

Looking unwashed and sometimes appearing from a poor social group are attributes that have long been used in the fashion industry for profit.

According to The Berkeley Beacon, "poor chic," also called "homeless chic," became popular in the 1980s and, like most trends, comes back into fashion every 20 years or so.

This trend is considered one of the most controversial in fashion, as it demonstrates the "adaptation of luxury to difficult and traumatic circumstances."

Other problematic fashion trends include models walking the runway wearing items that glorify mental illness, such as Gucci's infamous spring/summer 2020 show.

Gucci models then walked the runway wearing straitjackets, which are commonly used to restrain patients suffering from severe mental illnesses and disorders.

The controversial event prompted model Ayesha Tan-Jones to write "Mental health is not fashion" on her arms and then show them off on the runway.

According to the BBC, Ayesha wrote on social media: “Many of the other Gucci models in the show felt as strongly as I did about the straitjackets, and without their support I would not have had the courage to come out and peacefully express your protest."

The reaction from readers of the Vogue article was quite strong and quite expected. Many commentators joked that it doesn’t take much brains to depict such a hairstyle. Here are typical responses:

“Haha, thanks, but I’d rather continue to wear clean hair”, “It seems that I accidentally joined a fashion trend for a while”, “It’s lice season”, “Such hairstyles may suit models on the catwalk, but ordinary people will look like they urgently need to take a shower”, “Finally my time has come”, “Oh, this is a trend I can easily follow!”, “I haven’t heard anything dumber. Since when did lack of hygiene become stylish?”, “If I come to work looking like this, they’ll send me home,” “Our world is screwed,” “I guess we just gave up because the world is on fire and nothing matters anymore.” .
