This profession, due to books and films, is shrouded in mystery and a certain flair of romance. It is always interesting to follow the progress of the investigation and the thoughts of Hercule Poirot or Sherlock Holmes.

But what does detective work actually look like? What are the interesting features of this profession and how do books differ from reality?

Former criminal turned detective

The famous Eugene Francois Vidocq was a dashing fellow. He was a star in the world of crime, he killed, robbed, sat in various prisons, fought, and his weakness was wine and women. And only later did he take the other side and send many criminals to the bunks. The video completely reflects the idea “if you want to catch a criminal, think like a criminal.”

It was Vidocq who created the first private detective agency.

Woman

23-year-old Kate Warne, who became a widow at an early age, once saw an advertisement in the newspaper that Alan Pinkerton was recruiting new agents in Chicago. The agency owner was stunned to see an elegant lady on the threshold of his agency, but quickly realized that a woman can do what a man cannot.

It is easier for a woman to gain the trust of a criminal, to get close to his secrets, and Kate, who zealously took up her work, became an indispensable employee. Perhaps her most high-profile case was preventing the assassination of President Lincoln.

Space

Raymond Harris (geography professor and satellite imaging specialist) and Raymond Purdy (lawyer) opened the world's first and only space detective agency.

The company is located in London and promises to help in cases where you need to look at what is happening from a height of space flight. If, for example, you need to see that some organization is polluting the environment, or someone is extracting oil in protected areas, or investigate war crimes in third world countries.

Satellite imagery at trial impresses jurors and judges.

Who becomes a detective

Most often, these are people who worked in the police, who have either already retired, or have decided to leave their jobs in government agencies. These are ready-made professionals and they do not need to undergo additional training. A detective must have good leadership qualities, that is, they most likely become leaders of certain areas or ex-operatives.

Those who left the police, but want something of their own, so as not to work “for their uncle” again, are the ones who become private detectives.

Famous detectives

In addition to Alan Pinkerton and Eugene Vidocq, there were other famous detectives, but they are undeservedly forgotten.

Osip Shor

He was born in 1891 and died in 1978. He is called the main prototype of the famous Ostap Bender. The great schemer was not a detective, but he was extremely resourceful and persistent. Shor was born in Nikopol, spent his childhood in Odessa and before the revolution he studied in St. Petersburg (he did not complete his studies). Trying to return home, Shor told everyone that he was either a chess player, or someone’s fiancé, or even a member of the underground. Upon returning home, Shor began working for the Cheka.

Duane Chapman

Born in 1953.

He is not the most standard detective, and his activities periodically appear in the press. He is called the Dog because of his fanatical dedication to his work. By the way, he, like Vidocq, is a former prisoner - in his youth he served a one-and-a-half-year sentence for armed robbery.

The bounty hunter is often invited to various talk shows as a guest star. By the way, his agency is a family business; Dwayne’s sons and his relatives catch criminals.

Charles Field

Born in 1805. Scotland Yard was a famous and large organization and became famous throughout the world thanks to people like Charles Field.

He joined the service as an ordinary sergeant, already in 1845 he began working in the detective department, and seven years later he left the service as the head of the department.

Charles Dickens was very fond of poly in his time.tion and investigations and went with them on night raids. It was there that he became friends with Field, who, after leaving the service, continued to work as a private detective.

Ivan Putilin

Born in 1830 in Novy Oskol (died in 1889).

Putilin’s father was a station superintendent, and Ivan himself, already at 27, was awarded an order and medal, moving up the career ladder with extreme speed, solving one case after another.

In 1886, Putilin became the head of the detective police of St. Petersburg, and in 1874 he was promoted to the rank of “Actual State Councilor.”

Arkady Koshko

He was born in 1867 in Minsk. Since childhood, Koshko read detective novels and began working in Riga as an ordinary inspector. Six years later he became the head of the Riga Police, and in 1908 he took up the post of police chief in Moscow.

It was Koshko who developed a new identification system: collecting and ranking fingerprint and anthropometric data of criminals. The system was even adopted by Scotland Yard.

After the revolution, the detective moved to France, but there he no longer worked by his own admission.
