Bridge collapse incident sparks discussion about corruption and mismanagement in India
The moment a bridge under construction collapsed was caught on camera in Bihar, India on Sunday.
Witnesses can be heard gasping as the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge collapsed into the Ganges River.
This is reportedly the second time the bridge has collapsed.
The incident sparked controversy about corruption and mismanagement in India.
Amit Malviya, a senior official in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, called for the resignation of officials in Bihar, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
“In 2015, Nitish Kumar opened this bridge, which was supposed to be completed by 2020,” Mr. Malviya tweeted.
“This bridge collapsed for the second time. Will Nitish Kumar and [Deputy Chief Minister] Tejashvi Yadav resign immediately after considering this incident? By doing this, both uncle and nephew can set an example for the country.”
BJP politician Shehzad Jai Hind tweeted a video of the bridge collapsing, blaming corruption in the incident. He did not provide evidence to support the claim. Local authorities have said that the construction of the bridge should be completed in November this year.
