Drug-addicted swans hurt local farmers in Slovakia

But the birds are also sorry. They are on hard drugs.

Farmers in the Slovak town of Komarno complain about swans eating their poppies and then lying in the field, passed out. The damage from birds has already amounted to more than 10 thousand euros.

It is noteworthy that farmers reported the strange behavior of swans back in February of this year. But they did not attach much importance to this, considering that large puddles attract birds.

But then there were only a few of them, and after a couple of months, whole flocks began to arrive on the field. Then the farmers sounded the alarm. And the problem was no longer swans, but local laws that forbid not only to hunt them, but also to scare them away, wherever they were.

They arrived gradually. We counted over 200 swans here.

Experts believe that birds have confused poppy flowers with their favorite delicacy - rapeseed. And within a few months they became opiate addicts. Now the besotted birds, which cannot fly up or lie in the field at all, are being taken care of by volunteers. They catch them and take them to rehabilitation. It is noted that many birds have health problems, and this is not counting those that have become easy prey for predators.
