Years later, the author of the picture, American photojournalist Joe O'Donnell told a Japanese journalist about the photo: "I I noticed how a boy of about ten approached. He carried the baby on his back. Those days in Japan we often saw children rolling their little brothers or sisters on the back, but this was clearly not the case. I saw that this the boy came here for a good reason. He was barefoot. His face was hard. The baby's small head was thrown back, as if he slept soundly. The boy stood there for five or ten minutes. Men in white masked approached him and quietly began to remove the rope on which the baby was holding. That's when I saw that he was already dead. Men took the body by the arms and legs and lowered it into the fire. The boy stood up straight without moving, and looked at the flames. He bit his lower lip so hard that she was glistening with blood. The flame burned low, as if the sun were setting. The boy turned and silently left.
