Nitric acid truck overturns in Arizona
A serious environmental emergency occurred in Tucson on Wednesday. The truck, in which there was nitric acid, drove into the median and overturned. The driver died on the spot. People passing by saw a brown cloud that appeared after the evaporation of nitric acid.
Residents of nearby areas were evacuated. Reuters reports this with reference to local authorities. Only after 5 hours, experts were able to stop the spread of the hazardous substance.
The University of Washington said that nitric acid is used to clean glassware or metal equipment. This substance is a highly corrosive chemical that can cause severe lung damage if inhaled and irritation on contact with skin and eyes.
