The skeleton of the largest dinosaur in the history of the Earth was brought to the UK (10 photos + 1 video)

14 February 2023

The largest dinosaur that once trampled the Earth, the other day delivered to the UK. To transport the skeleton of a patagotitan (aka titanosaurus) had to use not one, but two aircraft. No wonder, because the length of the exhibit exceeds 35 meters! The skeleton will assembled and displayed at the Natural History Museum in London.

Replica of Patagotitan mayorum skeleton brought from Patagonia (Argentina), where in 2010 the remains of this reptile were discovered. It is believed that the giant weighed about 70 tons, and its length reached 37 meters. Patagotitan belongs to the genus of sauropods, he lived 100-95 million years ago, was a herbivore, had a short body and a long thick neck.

The exhibit is 35 meters long and weighs 65 tons, which is stored in Museum of the Argentine city of Trelew, was disassembled into more than 40 boxes back in November. Now the boxes have been loaded onto two Boeing 787-9 aircraft and delivered to London Heathrow Airport.

The skeleton will be the center of the exhibition "Titanosaurus: Life the largest dinosaur", which will open at the Museum of Natural stories March 31st. It will be seen in Europe for the first time: until now it has been exhibited only at the Egidio Feruglio Museum of Paleontology in Trelew.

To better understand the size of the exhibit, it is enough to say, that it is four times heavier than the famous museum diplodocus Dippy. Togo himself, whose copies are exhibited in 10 major paleontological museums world (Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Moscow, etc.). Dippy's length is some pathetic 26 meters. As they say, feel the difference!

Titanosaurs were the last great family sauropod dinosaurs before extinction in the Cretaceous and Paleogene period, about 65 million years ago. This group includes the largest known land animals, some even approaching the size of modern whales.

Titanosaurus skeleton to be shown at the Museum of Natural History history, is based on the remains discovered in 2010-2012 in Patagonia. They found a set of fossils that are believed to belonged to six different titanosaurus dinosaurs.

"Legendary tyrannosaurus rex and other carnivorous dinosaurs look like dwarfs when compared to one of those giant titanosaurs," said Diego Paul of the Egidio Paleontological Museum. Feruglio. "It's like putting an elephant next to a lion."

The original bones are kept in the Trelew Museum collection, however they are in such demand that copies have been made that have exhibited in Chicago and New York in the USA.
