"The FH-227 Andes disaster (also known as the Miracle in the Andes) - aviation accident that occurred in the Andes on October 13, 1972.
aviation accident that occurred in the Andes on October 13, 1972. The Uruguayan Air Force Fairchild FH-227D operated an FAU charter flight 571 on the Montevideo-Mendoza-Santiago route, and on board were 5 crew members and 40 passengers (members of the rugby team "Old Christians, their relatives and sponsors). On approach to Santiago liner fell into a cyclone, crashed into a rock and collapsed at the foot of the mountain - an extinct Tinguiririka volcano. 12 people died in a fall and collision with rock, 5 more died later from wounds and cold. Then from the remaining 28 8 more survivors died during an avalanche that covered their "dwelling" from aircraft fuselage, and later 3 more died of wounds.
The survivors had a minimal supply of food, in addition, they had there were no heat sources necessary for survival in the harsh cold climate at an altitude of 3600 meters. Desperate for hunger and messages on the radio that “all activities to search for the missing aircraft stop", people began to eat the frozen bodies of their dead comrades. Rescuers did not learn about the survivors until 72 days later, when two passengers after a 10-day mountain crossing were met by a Chilean farmer who gave them first aid and informed the authorities about the rest passengers of Flight 571."
