How two friends turned a Cadillac into the fastest hot tub in the world (28 photos + 1 video)
Many years ago, at a Canadian college, two future engineers drank beer carelessly, when suddenly came to their drunken heads grandiose idea to set a world record by building the fastest in jacuzzi world. Because... and why not!
This is Phil Weiker and Duncan Forster, who now live in Los Angeles, but studied in Canada many years ago. They studied at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, when the idea hit them create a one-of-a-kind mobile hot tub. It was back in 1996 year, so that they had plenty of time to think through the plan to the slightest details.
For the base, something big, beautiful and unique was required - at the same time, so that the jacuzzi is really the fastest in the world, also a powerful engine was needed. The engineers opted for 1969 Cadillac Coupe DeVille convertible - big car with cool appearance, big engine and strong frame. He was on move and cost friends only $ 800.
After taking the Cadillac to the workshop, they proceeded to remove unnecessary interior and strengthening the body and frame so that the car can withstand hundreds of liters of water.
So that in the world's fastest jacuzzi you can lie quietly and relax, friends had to completely rebuild the interior of the car, including remove the dashboard, remove all seats and rear panel.
After that, they had to model the future hydromassage bath using plywood and MDF (Medium Fibreboard) density).
They took MDF and more plywood and created a "negative". They needed to make the surface absolutely perfect, so they sanded the mold, seemed like an eternity, and covered it with a special material to make it smooth.
When they were done, they covered the mold with several layers of fiberglass and filled it with gallons of plastic.
Once the tub was dry, the friends used compressed air to blow it out of the mould.
The bathtub was installed in the car and it fit perfectly. Then friends began work on the control system. Moreover, they needed install the nozzle system, pump, heater and filter.
The dashboard was made using the same technology fiberglass as the bath itself. All sensors are fully waterproof and protected from splashes.
Engineers had to work hard when it came to installation pump, filter and overflow tank. They had to run pipes through inside to the right places in the hot tub itself. For heating water up to 102 degrees they decided to use a car engine - it will be take place using the heat exchangers in the image below, which installed on the floor under the passenger seat.
After finishing with the interior and plumbing, the friends proceeded to paint and bodywork. The car was supposed to be not only the fastest jacuzzi in the world, but also look great when it will fly on full speed through the salt flats of Bonneville, Utah.
Having prepared the body and covered the interior, the friends decided to paint "Cadillac" in a beautiful light blue color, which will emphasize the bath itself.
They also hand-restored all the emblems.
They also had to restore andpolish all chrome. Cadillacs are infamous for being equipped with a huge number of chrome.
When the appearance was finished, it was time to reinforce the frame and suspension so that the car can comfortably carry hundreds of liters of water.
This meant that the subframe had to be fully reinforced with steel, repaired and painted.
After strengthening the frame, the next step was to make an adequate suspension. Friends decided to use a custom air cushion for extra strength and adjustability.
The capacity of the plant is a whopping 472 cubic inches. It should do the job just fine, outputting something like 375 Horse power.
The guys hope to set a world record during the “Week Speed" in the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. They have carefully studied rules and provided for all the details, including the issue of security. Quicker total, the world record for the fastest hot tub has yet to be installed, so their chances are quite high.
It's time to test this handsome man. Friends called him "Cadillac Carpool DeVille" and it's guaranteed to grab attention.
From a distance, you would never guess that this car is actually a fully functional mobile hot tub.
If you look directly behind the driver's side mirror, you can see throttle control knobs. The system controls the engine and control speed and braking. To move the handle you need move forward, and pull back to brake. Slow down be sure to very slowly - with sudden braking, all the water in the car surges forward.
Here's a close-up of the interior. There are no sensors yet, but you can estimate, how cool the throttle grips look next to chrome steering wheel.
You can imagine the reaction of the driver, next to whom these two will stop at the traffic light ...
"Cadillac Carpool DeVille" is probably already the fastest hot tub in the world, but friends have launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for a trip to the Bonneville salt flats and officially to prove it. They asked for $11,000 to rent a tractor pay for gas and other travel expenses, and achieved their goal.
Now you can relax!
And here is a video about how the world's fastest jacuzzi was built and what it looks like in action. What do you think, would you ride in this?
