It would never occur to anyone to climb mountains in a Porsche 911. Except for the guys from Porsche themselves. In Chile they took two cars and drove up to the highest volcano in the world.

Porsche cars have won individual races and championships in the widest range of racing series, from circuit to off-road rallies. But real enthusiasts are never enough and a group of citizens dared on an adventure in extremely harsh conditions! They decided to climb the top of the highest volcano on earth. On a Porsche 911...

Ojos del Salado (Spanish: Ojos del Salado) is the highest volcano on Earth and the second highest peak in South America (6893 meters), located on border between Argentina and Chile. The volcano is considered extinct because throughout the history of observations, it has not been recorded one eruption. However, occasionally passive volcanic activity still manifests itself, for example, in 1937, 1956 and 1993 were observed minor emissions of sulfur and water vapor. However, the climate in the vicinity of the volcano is extremely severe, dry and does not give vegetation has no chance of life. And at an altitude of 6000 meters snow, ice, the temperature is below -30 degrees, and the oxygen content in the air twice as low as at sea level. Excellent conditions for a sports car;)

Two Porsche 911 Carrera 4S with 450 hp prepared for the event boxer turbo sixes. This Porsche accelerates to "hundreds" less than in 4 seconds and develops a speed of more than 300 km / h, but on an expedition on the volcano, these characteristics were not important, from the word at all! What was needed was a rigid body, a short base and four-wheel drive. 911th equipped with a safety cage, and the ground clearance was increased to 350 mm, using portal bridges as in the extreme Mercedes-Benz G-class 4x4² or the domestic all-terrain vehicle LUAZ, as well as a set of severe off-road tires and underbody protection. The SUV from the 911 turned out to be very serious!

The team of racing driver Romain Dumas went to the volcano, regularly performing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Overcoming difficult terrain, snow and ice, managed to reach a height of 6,007 meters above sea level. This, of course, is not record: in 2007, the Chilean Gonzalo Bravo on a modified SUV Suzuki climbed to a height of 6,688 meters, and in 2020 a couple of Mercedes-Benz Unimog reached a height of 6,693 meters, setting a record for wheeled vehicles.

In general, although it was not possible to set a record, the expedition turned out to be very interesting, and the result worthy of respect! The main thing is that the 911th co time has not turned into a crossover. I hope marketers from Stuttgart is not smart enough for this, although some research and development underway...
