The photographer managed to capture the moment when two gorillas had a “boxing match”, in which the main prize was food.
Western lowland gorillas from Paignton Zoo, England, named Kivu and N'Dowe, decided to find out who owned the corn.
One photo shows the primate, nicknamed Kivu, trying to cover his face with one hand while the other tries to deal a crushing blow to his opponent, nicknamed Endowey.
From the photographs it is clear that Kivu's blow seems to reach its target - Endoway's face - although the photographer, who is a regular visitor to this zoo, insists that this did not happen.
The photographer, who did not want to give his name, explained that Kivu is on the left in the images, while Endowei is on the right.
“As you can see from the photos, Endoway jumped on Kivu to demonstrate that he was the dominant one, but Kivu defended himself by raising his hands,” he says. “It may look like they are boxing, but I can assure you that they were not punching each other.”
“Endoway likes to dominate, mainly due to his massive size. However, this time it was Kivu who received more food,” he added.
It is worth saying that among the western lowland gorillas, clashes over food quite often occur, since they have a class system.
Note that Endowey in the zoo has the highest rating among all individuals, while Kivu has a lower rank.
And since gorillas have a developed class system, it is the stronger individual that usually has priority right of choice.
Yes, of course, at the zoo, workers try to make sure that all animals receive an equal amount of food, and yet you cannot argue against nature, and in this case, it is Endovey, as the “leader,” who is the first to touch the food.
