3D zebra prevents drivers from killing pedestrians (5 photos + 2 videos)
Illusions in art are no longer surprising. But the small fishing town of Isafjordur in Iceland has taken things to a new level - they use 3D effects to ensure the safety of the population. Last month, a pedestrian crossing was painted on a narrow street that seemed to float above the asphalt. Any driver would definitely stop when they saw this.
Environment Commissioner Ralf Trylla was looking for creative ideas on how to slow down traffic and came across a similar project in New Delhi, India. He invited street art company Vegm?lun G?H to collaborate. Before applying the drawing to the asphalt, they experimented for several weeks, achieving the perfect technique.
The effect was stunning - the optical illusion changes depending on the angle of view. From the air, the white stripes turn into a column of thick walls, and from the ground it seems as if they are floating in the air. For now, the project is considered experimental: local residents are getting used to the 3D zebra crossing, and the authorities are deciding whether to make such pedestrian crossings throughout the city.
