A tornado (synonyms: tornado, thrombus, meso-hurricane) is a very strong rotating vortex with horizontal dimensions of less than 50 km and vertical dimensions of less than 10 km, with hurricane wind speeds of more than 33 m/s. The energy of a typical tornado with a radius of 1 km and an average speed of 70 m/s is equal to the energy of a standard atomic bomb of 20 kilotons of TNT, similar to the first atomic bomb detonated by the United States during the Trinity test in New Mexico on July 16, 1945.
