"The Liberty Ship" is a fantastic dream that could become reality... You've probably seen similar illustrations in old popular science publications depicting the stunning concept of a floating city. Could you have imagined back then that these projects would be seriously considered and put into practice?
"Freedom Ship"
According to the official website, the planned "Freedom Ship" may look something like this:
Imagine a section of a metropolis, one by two kilometers, built up with 25-story buildings. Now imagine it floating in the sea!
"The Liberty Ship" looks a bit like a regular ship, and in fact, it is nothing more than a large barge. What if we send this giant barge on a leisurely round-the-world trip along the coast for about three years? There is even talk of making an independent state out of this floating city.
By the way, the Liberty Ship will also be the largest structure created by mankind on Earth. However, no matter how magnificently this ship is built, it will be extremely vulnerable to shipwreck. In the meantime, we can only dream, looking at the pictures, that this project will be realized:
Notice the similarity of the project pictured above with the model of the airport on the roof of the giant building of 1928. Los Angeles architects foresaw the replacement of cars with private jets in the near future, so they designed a 300-meter runway on the roof of the building:
Or take a look at these fantastic "airport docks" in New York:
Some people mistakenly assume that the deck of the "Liberty Ship" can accommodate 747 aircraft.
In fact, the largest aircraft that this deck can accommodate is a 38-40-seat aircraft.
Other Cruise Ship Concepts
Some of these would dwarf most existing ships in comparison.
The large-capacity cruise ship Kvaerner Masa-Yards and the Panamax-Max ship with a displacement of over 1,000 tons:
"Project Genesis" is the largest cruise ship Royal Caribbean has ever built, capable of carrying 5,400 passengers.
To get an idea of the size of a modern cruise ship, compare it to the Statue of Liberty. The new ship, codenamed "Project Genesis", has a displacement of 222,000 tons (about 100,000 tons underway - compared to a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, which has a displacement of about 97,000 tons).
Huge supertankers
The largest ships in the world were considered to be four supertankers built in France in the late seventies, with a displacement of 555,000 tons and a length of 414 meters. They were launched at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Lazare.
- Batillus, built 1976, decommissioned 1985.
- Bellamya, built 1976, decommissioned 1986.
- Pierre Guillaumat, built 1977, decommissioned 1983.
- Prairial, built 1979, decommissioned 2003.
Here are some photos of the "Pierre Guillaumat" - the largest ever built ships:
Big ships - big problems
And here's why you shouldn't build too big ships :)
