Hashima Island (meaning "Border Island"), commonly called Gunkanjima (meaning "Warship Island"), is one of the 505 islands in Nagasaki Prefecture and is located 15 km from Nagasaki City itself. From 1887 to 1974 there were coal mines here. The island is replete with abandoned buildings.
