Production designers are increasingly turning to digital tech to bring cinematic worlds to life. Directors often shoot against green or blue screens, leaving it to CGI artists to paint in landscapes and lavish interiors in post-production. But a colored backdrop isn't always enough—sometimes entire universes are built right on the soundstage. To push realism to the limit, soundstages are paneled with authentic materials, buried under thousands of tons of dirt, and chilled to freezing temperatures.

Other times, filmmakers venture into the wild in search of otherworldly backdrops, taking full advantage of natural terrain. Unlike soundstage builds, sets constructed on location aren't always torn down after the final cut. Many are simply left behind to weather the elements in remote forests and desolate deserts. These 10 iconic film sets were abandoned after production wrapped—and today, anyone can explore them.

1. Star Wars

The arid landscapes near the small Tunisian town of Nefta were the perfect stand-in for the desert planet of Tatooine in the *Star Wars* saga. Right in the middle of the dunes, George Lucas and his crew built Mos Espa, complete with its distinctive, dome-shaped alien dwellings.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean

In *Pirates of the Caribbean*, the historic harbor of Port Royal serves as the home base for several key characters. The set was constructed along Wallilabou Bay, tucked away on the Caribbean island nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

3. The Hunger Games

District 12, the poorest district in Panem, was brought to life in North Carolina's Henry River Mill Village. Abandoned by residents back in the 1920s, the ghost town still holds roughly 20 buildings and a company store, which served as the primary backdrop for Katniss Everdeen's impoverished home.

4. Zero Dark Thirty

Several pivotal scenes in *Zero Dark Thirty* were filmed at Blue Cloud Movie Ranch. Located about 30 miles outside Hollywood, this versatile property is a longtime favorite for directors seeking desert and compound sets.

5. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

The fictional fairy-tale village of Augsburg was built directly inside a dense forest just outside Berlin, Germany, giving the production an authentic, brooding European folklore atmosphere.

6. The Abyss

James Cameron didn’t have to build every massive environment from scratch for *The Abyss*. Instead, he repurposed the unfinished Cherokee Nuclear Power Plant near Gaffney, South Carolina, converting its containment structures into massive water tanks for the movie’s groundbreaking underwater shoots.

7. The Hills Have Eyes

Horror fans can step straight into the nightmare of *The Hills Have Eyes* in Morocco. The eerie, isolated gas station built for the film still stands in the Souss-Massa-Drâa region.

8. Big Fish

The idyllic town of Spectre from Tim Burton’s fantasy-dramedy *Big Fish* was built on an island in the middle of the Alabama River near Montgomery. Today, the town is still there, slowly being reclaimed by nature as Spanish moss and overgrowth take over the buildings.

9. Full Metal Jacket

Stanley Kubrick filmed his iconic Vietnam War epic entirely in England. The devastated city of Huế was recreated at London’s abandoned Beckton Gas Works, which perfectly captured the look of a battle-scarred war zone.

10. The Lord of the Rings

The Shire, home of the Hobbits in the legendary *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy, was created on a working sheep farm in New Zealand. Unsurprisingly, sheep remain some of its most frequent residents to this day.
