In 1939, two engineers from Sheffield demonstrated a device designed to protect pedestrians in the event of a collision. A net would deploy in front of the car to catch the person.
The British Pathé archive preserves footage of the test: one of the inventors drives the vehicle, while the other plays the role of a pedestrian holding a newspaper. He ends up in the deployed net in front of the car.
