Fishermen in India rushed to the rescue of a baby elephant swept away by the currents of the Teesta River. The newborn calf was far too small to battle the rushing waters on his own.
In West Bengal, a four-day-old elephant calf narrowly escaped drowning while crossing the Teesta River with his herd. The fierce current dragged the little one nearly four kilometers away from his mother.
Local fishermen spotted the struggling calf and rowed out to him in their boat. Joining forces, they managed to haul the baby out of the water. Wildlife and forestry officials soon stepped in, transporting the calf to the Kathambari beat to be examined by a veterinarian.
Rescuers then helped reunite the calf with his mother. She welcomed him back, nursed him, and the pair safely rejoined their herd.
