Woody Harrelson, the man of the hour: what is known about the life of a beloved figure (8 photos)
Woody Harrelson is such a wonderful actor and person that audiences don't even remember the names of his characters. He's simply Woody Harrelson everywhere, and that's enough to make the film worth watching. Mischievous and illogical, he's a committed vegan, but he's also not averse to getting drunk and causing mischief. At social gatherings, he keeps to himself, and after a few drinks, he'll make faces at photographers while sitting in a corner.
The actor's filmography is well known to everyone, so it's hardly worth listing the mega-blockbusters he's starred in. But very little is known about Woody's private life. Here are a few facts that are known to few or are poorly and one-sidedly covered by journalists.
1. Woody Harrelson's father was a hitman
Perhaps everyone knows that Harrelson Sr. was a hitman and ended his life in prison. But few know about the relationship between father and son. Charles Harrelson was arrested on suspicion of murder in 1969, when Woody was only seven years old, but that didn't stop his son from loving and respecting him.
Charles was accused of contract killing a judge who had crossed a major Texas drug dealer. At his trial, the defendant was extremely frank, stating that his family's dire financial situation had forced him to commit the crime.
In 1973, Woody, his mother, and his brothers left their native Texas and moved to Ohio, where they weren't associated with the family of a hitman. Even then, the boy vowed to make his way in life and ensure his family would never want for anything.
Woody's mother was against Woody seeing his father, but he secretly visited Charles in prison several times. The elder Harrelson had no chance of being released, having been sentenced to two life sentences, so visits with his son were very important to him. In 2007, Charles died of a heart attack. Woody always remembers his father fondly, saying he was an intelligent and well-read man who was confused about life.
2. Woody Harrelson was a troublemaker in his youth
Looking at a photo of a young Woody, one might immediately conclude that he had some troubles with the law. This is true, but fortunately, all of his misadventures were relatively harmless. Harrelson's first arrest was for drunkenly dancing in the middle of a street in Columbus, Ohio.
The boy was screaming and laughing like crazy, immediately attracting the attention of the police. During an attempt to arrest him, Woody punched one cop in the jaw and sent another fleeing, after which he attempted to continue his activities. Reinforcements arrived, subdued the drunken troublemaker, beat him up soundly, and took him to the police station.
Woody barely remembered the circumstances of his arrest and insisted that he had simply gotten sunburned. But this excuse didn't sway the judge, and Harrelson was sentenced to community service. Later, there were other, less amusing episodes, invariably involving Woody, whiskey, and the police.
3. Woody Harrelson runs his Instagram like your dad
Harrelson's Instagram doesn't look anything like a megastar's account. It's more like your dad's or, say, your neighbor's Odnoklassniki page. It's full of photos from football games and other sporting events, selfies with random celebrities, and drunken photos taken at a bar or picnic. It's also full of funny pictures and memes, which is especially endearing. Here, for example, is a timeless classic:
By the way, Woody's political and socially charged posts are often tagged by his compatriots. Clearly, the actor shares a similar mentality to the user.
4. Harrelson plays the guitar well and sings well
As a very young man, Woody was seriously involved in music and even played in amateur bands with other mischievous kids like himself. After becoming an actor, Harrelson began to devote much less attention to this hobby, but he never abandoned it completely. In 1992, he even briefly served as the lead singer for a funk band with the long name Manly Moondog and the Three Kool Kats, and he sang beautifully.
The actor has probably broken more than a few tender hearts with his love lyrics. So, it's safe to say that Woody Harrelson's talent is multifaceted.
5. Harrelson leads a healthy lifestyle… but drinks
The actor hasn't eaten meat or flour products for many years, and he also abhors sugar. He enjoys yoga and other Eastern practices, but he's hardly a role model. The fact is, despite all his virtues, Harrelson is no slouch and, as some say, rarely goes without a joint in his free time.
The actor himself is irritated by questions about this aspect of his life, and he once told reporters about it:
I'm tired of people constantly trying to figure out if I'm high when they talk to me. So, if I do allow myself a joint, it's only away from public view, which, unfortunately, I do too rarely.
We have no reason not to believe Woody, because he's a simple and charming guy, who, like the magnificent Keanu, is a true gem on the Hollywood scene.
