A dark reimagining of a classic: Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as Ebenezer Scrooge
Fans of the gothic style and dark fairy tales have reason to rejoice: Paramount Pictures has released the first official trailer for *Ebenezer: A Christmas Story*, based on the classic novella by Charles Dickens. This new adaptation promises to be a truly unique spectacle, as it is directed by horror maestro Ti West, known for his atmospheric and suspenseful work.
The story centers on Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter and solitary London miser whose soul is targeted by terrifying supernatural forces on Christmas Eve. Judging by the trailer, audiences are in for not the usual heartwarming tale, but a dark, frightening, and mystical thriller that restores the story’s original, somber tone. In addition to Johnny Depp—who is virtually unrecognizable in the makeup of the aging protagonist—the project boasts a star-studded cast that includes Ian McKellen, Andrea Riseborough, and Rupert Grint. For Depp, this major studio role marks a long-awaited return to Hollywood cinema; the film is scheduled for theatrical release in November 2026.
