An old Ford was raised from the bottom of a frozen lake after lying there for almost half a century (6 photos + 2 videos)
A 1973 Ford Galaxie has been recovered from Lake Winnebago, the result of a bizarre dispute back in 1980. A video of the car's recovery was published on the Sunk Dive Ice channel. Apparently, the car, which has become a local legend over the years, is beyond repair.
In the winter of 1980, the incident arose out of a barroom debate about the ice conditions on Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin. One of the disputants decided to prove the ice was strong enough by attempting to drive his 1973 Ford Galaxie on the lake. A few kilometers from shore, misfortune struck: the ice cracked, and the car sank. The hapless driver managed to escape and reach shore.
Over time, the story of the sunken car became legendary, and local residents began to dismiss it as a fabrication. However, several years ago, a local fisherman discovered the Ford on the lakebed using his fish finder. Earlier this year, specialists from Sunk Dive Ice finally decided to retrieve the car. The process required divers and took several days.
As far as can be judged from the video, over the years the Galaxie spent underwater, it began to fall apart from rust and became a habitat for lake creatures. It completely lost its glass, and the interior filled with silt. The car's fate is unclear: it is possible it will simply be sent to a landfill.
