From church to brothel: California bishop squandered a million dollars of parishioners' money in Mexican brothels (4 photos)
Gentlemen, it's been a while since we've featured a truly sinful bishop, so it's time to catch up. The story of 69-year-old Emmanuel Chalet from San Diego is a case where reality delivers a plot far more compelling than any TV series about "bad guys" in cassocks.
While parishioners were bringing their savings to church, their spiritual leader apparently confused his vow of poverty with unlimited credit. According to the Daily Mail, the prelate led a double life the scale of which would make rock stars envious.
The investigation found that the Holy Father embezzled more than $1.1 million from diocesan funds. The money, intended for refugees and poor families, was used for gambling. Chaleta regularly visited Viejas Casino, where he withdrew church funds directly from the casino's ATMs.
But the bishop's true passion turned out to be the Mexican border. According to GPS data and bank statements, Chaleta was a VIP guest at the notorious Hong Kong Club in Tijuana—an establishment known for everything but the recitation of psalms. Border control records confirm that the bishop visited this "temple of vice" up to 12 times a month. He essentially lived in two countries: celebrating mass in San Diego during the day and "confessing" to employees of a Mexican brothel in the evening.
The denouement came at San Diego International Airport. Sensing trouble, Chalet bought a ticket to Rome, hoping to find refuge behind the high walls of the Vatican. However, the police acted preemptively: they handcuffed the "lost sheep" right at the gate, just as he was preparing for takeoff.
Shaleta claimed that during the investigation, which he claimed was conducted without his knowledge, he never "misused church funds." He was spending his savings on carousing.
"Or do you not know that he who has intercourse with a prostitute becomes one body with her?" (1 Corinthians 6:16).
This Scripture now sounds like a death sentence for Shaleta. Instead of a quiet cell in Italy, a California prison awaits him, along with a very long explanation from the prosecutor about how prayers turned into casino chips and bills from Mexican brothels.
