Red Rock Coulee: Martian Spheres on the Canadian Prairies (29 photos + 1 video)
Scattered among the pristine hills of southern Alberta are enormous, perfectly shaped, round red rocks.
The sight of these giant, fiery spheres dotting the steppe makes you feel like you've been transported to Mars. Some of the boulders exceed two and a half meters in diameter, making them among the largest sandstone concretions in the world.
Red Hollow can be challenging to reach. It's off the beaten path, and this remoteness creates an ethereal atmosphere.
Red Hollow is located approximately fifty kilometers southwest of Medicine Hat. While not directly on the route to other famous spots, this unique day trip is worth a detour and a true exploration.
Here you can climb the colossal stones and marvel at the mystery of their origin. One of the spheres is perfectly split in half, revealing its bizarre shape.
The concretions emerged from the soft parent rock after weathering and acquired their reddish color from iron oxide. If you're lucky, you might find unique quartz crystals among this colorful barren landscape, especially beautiful in the rays of the rising or setting sun.
